Day 00

The Hull Digital Media Labs is a week long residency program with a group of ten chosen artists working alongside one another as part of a commissioning process for a touch screen based art work for the new NHS Hull Wilberforce Health Centre. I was nominated to take part as one of the artists on the residency and will be documenting our findings and work as the week progresses. Day 00 – we all arrived, checked in to the hotel and went for a walk around Hull to chat and... Read More

Work in progress in progress

Today’s technical sessions were designed to make us aware of the possibilities of the various technologies that can be used to author works for the touchscreens. I’m already quite good friends with Processing, and am on speaking terms with Quartz Composer. Flash, however, has never been particularly pleasant company and while I’ve heard interesting things about VVVV, we never cross paths in the OSX environment. This means that I’ll probably be making whatever... Read More

Sucked into the vortex of doom (for a bit).

Hit a wall of questions, complications and doubts. My flipant vortex of doom (yesterdays video made with Prezi), turned out to be more poignant than intended. After struggling to ‘find content’ to fill the touch screen with, i began to question the function, purpose and potential of the medium. I was becoming fearful of being seduced by the immediacy and novelty, creating what us labbers have come to know as ‘eye jazz’ (varying levels of screen saver, albeit... Read More

so many questions, so little time

Day 2: This morning we were introduced to a few different visual programming environments and their capabilities (all new to me). I always find programming languages a bit daunting, and never seem to gain more than a basic understanding of what’s going on. It seems unlikely that I’ll acquire adequate knowledge in any of the programs in a few days to be able to create a functioning piece. But maybe I can scrape together something that explores some element of my ideas. Another... Read More

A Sensory Gift

Yesterday I was considering intangible space, such as in the mind or as a series of different spaces and timeframes. Today I have developed this initial concept further, taking an intangible connection and forming a linear thread; even if the two or more elements and not directly associated. I like the idea of connecting spaces, people, or different time frames. Two unrelated moments, one of which is a direct result of the other. Some of the ideas I presented to the group today... Read More

Pool Balls

Inspired (or provoked) by the physics modeling and general “bally-ness” which seemed to be a key feature of many of the software examples we looked at today, I thought I would have a go at tracking, mapping and replicating some of the movements and collisions taking place on an actual pool table using processing.org. The pool table is a kind of archetypal piece of furniture in the social spaces of youth centres, prisons and pubs which is approachable, understood... Read More

Day 2: Scratch Card

Today we begun with introductions to a number of different programming tools including Quartz Composer, VVVV and Processing. I began to think more about the act of touching the touch screen – about the conceptual shift that occurs when you imagine the tip of your finger interacting with the computer screen rather than the mouse cursor. No doubt influenced by my role as Syndicate Secretary for the Artists’ Lottery Syndicate and by my wider interest in ‘alternative... Read More

.prezi-player { width: 550px; } .prezi-player-links { text-align: center; } DMLabsRoss on Prezi Here’s me playing with FLV video in Prezi using some footage from my good friend Chiz Turnross rockman video… I soon left this and obsessively cutout a variety of hull themed badges finishing up with some Digger Stunts. Prezi is nice as an exercise but difficult to really have enough control to make a touch screen piece that works…will use in the future for... Read More

…through the medium of cats

Day 1: We were all introduced to Prezi this morning and left to have a fiddle. I didn’t have any content of my own to put into the presentation so just resorted to my fall-back position, pulling amusing imagery of cats off the internet (which is probably what I would have done anyway). I wanted to see if I could upload images with transparencies, with the idea of layering them up and zooming through pictures to the ones below, to create false depth. Although I didn’t... Read More
