10 years to save touchscreens
Just been pointed to an article on the Gizmodo blog about how one of the vital materials used in the production of touchscreens is starting to run out. Read More
Day 3: The Cultural Void
Today was a bit of a slow day in comparison to the first two. I began by being sucked back into the real world, with 50+ emails that took my the whole morning to clear. In the afternoon we had a weird presentation by a guy called Peter Eyres – loosely based around exploring ‘alternative funding strategies’. We split into two groups to role-play a future without public funding from two different perspective – the corporate whore and the ‘social responsible’ artist. I... Read More
Free Range Artists Farms
Peter Eyers visit resulted in an interesting task about funding in which we were split into two groups, private and public and had to come up with different systems of supporting an art practice. Being part of the private / corporate group was a novelty, inevitably throwing up different questions around control, ethics and selling out. The result was the ‘Free Range Artists Farm’ where artists were looked after, free to roam and not forced to make too much work. Individuals,... Read More
Converting
After spending a pleasant early morning in a car park with a camera, I now have some workable footage to play with. It’s not perfect (no tripod) but it should provide the basis for the construction of something. I spent the productive part of today developing a Processing sketch that is now converting each of the 2216 frames of my video footage into 144 sections. Writing batch processing tools in Processing is slow going, mainly because my maths skills have atrophied during... Read More
Social Systems
Spent most of today exploring particle systems, classes and functions in Processing.org which – whilst stimulating was also pretty frustrating! 1st job tomorrow: very clear list in pseudo code of EXACTLY what it is I am trying to build… Follow this link to a very interesting film from 1988 on Archive.org “Particle Dreams” (1:30) which represents a collection of dream sequences using a 3D particle simulation system – one computer processor was required... early interactive art experiments
Was looking on the internet for interactive art and animation and stumble across this article on the blog of Scott Sona Snibbe an artist who makes a lot of interactive art. His work is very interesting and well worth checking out, especially because of it’s relevance to this project, but I thought the article was really interesting because it shows how the early attempts at interactivity didn’t really catch on either. Which links in with what John was saying yesterday... Read More
The day after
Quartz was not so crystal…. boxes and strings abound. I thought i could tie my laces but others was impossible. I was taught but didn’t really learn, i like theories about strings but so far no one has come up with a box theory, i think. So i did a lot of touching and stroking today but it didn’t feel very nice, i guess there was to much tension in the air. The screen and me aren’t getting on too well, we have some fundamental differences going on here.... Read More
Melted brain, melted brain
I spent the day realizing three things. Firstly: we have to have an artwork done in this stuff and i have no idea how to do anything. Secondly: Things like java and flash have huge potentials for projects am working on outside of DMlabs that straddle the line between animation and video editing. Thirdly: I am going to go away from this with a lot more questions and work than i came here with. (but at least i have some sign posts in the forms of program names and open source websites. Also... Day 02
Hull digital Media Labs Day 02 This morning started with Ben Dalton and Dave Lynch showing the group some more programs that can be used to create interactive content. Ben went through Processing in a little more detail than most of the artists had touched on on day one, and also introduced Quatrz Composer – a Mac based object oriented environment that can quite quickly make nice ‘eye jazz’. Dave then showed us some patch examples in vvvv (another object oriented... Read More
Day 01
Day 01 was our first day of starting work with the touch screens – we set up camp in the Hull College of Art and Design and after a bit of faffing about with technical things such as internet connections and coffee provisions we settled down to some work. After a quick talk with Benedict and the team we each made some notes on the notion of touch – what implications it has for interface design and also how we use touch every day as one of our connections with the...
